Osteopathy is for everyone!
What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a manual therapy that takes a holistic approach to health care, with a focus on balancing all the systems of the body to promote overall health and well-being. Using a hands-on approach, osteopaths find and treat the root cause of the symptoms with the main goal of having a positive impact on the body’s various systems to promote body functions.
Developed by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in the 1800s, osteopathy is rooted in the idea that the body can self-heal when the fluids of the body are flowing properly. Dr. Still’s research continues to be the foundation of the current osteopathic philosophy and was instrumental in the creation of the 4 main principles:
- The body is a functional unit- each structure supports the overall function of the body in an interconnected web. The physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and cognitive systems of your body have to work together in harmony to provide you with good health.
- The body is capable of healing itself when there are no restrictions on its systems. By rooming the restrictive barriers we can enable the healing mechanisms to be stimulated and supported.
- The natural flow of the body’s fluids (vascular, lymphatic, neurological) needs to be preserved and maintained to help provide the troubled areas with the necessary immune cells and nutrients.
- Structure governs function: if the structures (anatomy) of the body is compromised, then proper function (physiology) cannot fully exist.
